DOI and ORCID
To ensure long-term discoverability and proper attribution of works published through the ODP, we use persistent Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs).
A DOI consists of three elements: a resolver, a prefix, and a suffix.
- Resolver: always https://doi.org/
- Prefix: Texas A&M University Libraries’ prefix is 10.21423
- Suffix: for ODP publications, we use the namespace odp. followed by a randomly generated string from Crossref’s automatic generator.
This means we follow a constant prefix + randomized suffix pattern. For example, the DOI for the book Open Digital Publishing Guidelines is https://doi.org/10.21423/odp.vmfn5541 which resolves to the ODP URL https://odp.library.tamu.edu/odp-guidelines.
This approach ensures DOIs are:
- Unique (no collisions across systems)
- Opaque (not tied to internal metadata that may change)
- Distinguishable (separate from DOIs assigned through other TAMU Libraries services)
DOIs are created and registered as part of the publishing process.
Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID)
Authors are strongly encouraged, but not required, to provide an ORCID iD when submitting a book proposal. ORCID helps:
- Ensure accurate attribution of works
- Support interoperability with scholarly systems
- Increase the visibility of your scholarship
If you do not already have an ORCID iD, you can register for free at ORCID’s website. When provided, your ORCID iD will be included in the DOI registration for your publication.
Note: In general, there are two ways to add works to an ORCID, before or after a DOI is created. If you wanted to add works after the DOI is minted, you can add it directly to your profile follwoing these instructions.
